Fixing the Missing/Disappeared Desktop Icons in Win 7

Solution # 1:

  • First right click on the desktop
  • Select view from the context menu
  • Click on “Show Desktop Icons”

Solution # 2:

  • Create a system restore point before making any changes to window registry, you can find the guidelines to create a system restore point at http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/700-system-restore.html
  • Click on window Orb (Start) icon on the task bar
  • Type “regedit” and press enter
  • In the left pane navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\ WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon
  • Find a REG_SZ entry names as “shell” and check its value, which should be “Explorer.exe” without double quotation marks
  • If this entry does not exist, click on Edit -> New -> String Value and name it as “Shell”
  • Right Click on the “Shell” entry and click on “Modify”
  • Type the name “explorer.exe” and press OK and then restart the computer

Solution # 3:

  • Download MBAM from www.malwarebytes.org and install it on your computer
  • Follow the installation steps and make sure “Update MalwareBytes Anti-Malware” and “Launch Malwarebytes Anti-Malware” is checked
  • Click Finish
  • Scan and fix your computer with MBAM and restart your computer
