How to Restore Previous Installations after Installing Windows 7?

If you have switched your operating system from Windows Vista or Windows XP to Windows 7, you still have option to restore your previous installation. It means you can revert back to your previous operating system.

Step 1:

In the first step, we will determine if Windows.old folder exists as it is required to restore the previous installations.

  • Go to Start > Computer > View > Details
  • Right-click the Windows.old folder in the local disk C.
  • After few seconds, windows 7 will show you the size of the folder. If it is smaller than the size of free space available then you can restore installations otherwise not.

Step 2:

  • Insert windows 7 installation disc and restart computer.
  • Proceeding with the installation, click “repair your computer” in the install window.
  • Select windows 7 version to repair. Click next.
  • Click command prompt in the system recovery option

Step 3:

In the command prompt window type the following commands.

On entering these commands, if you receive the message of “The system cannot find the file specified” then type the commands given in the next step.

Step 4:

Type following commands according to your preferred operating system

Step 5:

In case your previous installation is Windows XP or Windows 2000, then type the following commands, and press Enter after each command.

Step 6:

Exit the command prompt window and restart computer.
