How to Connect Two Computers with Ad Hoc Wi-Fi Connection?

Below steps will help you configure two computers and connect them with an ad hoc Wi-Fi connection:

First Computer:

  1. Go to My Computer>Properties>Computer Name>Change.
  2. Enter computer name as ‘COMPUTER1’ and workgroup to ‘WG’.
  3. Click on Apply button and close the dialog.
  4. Now go to Network Connections.
  5. Right click on wireless adapter and select the option for Properties.
  6. Go to the tab for Wireless Network and click on Advanced button.
  7. Select the option for Computer to Computer networking. If any SSID box appears then enter network name in it.
  8. Close the window and click Add Preferred Networks
  9. Add below details
    * Network name (SSID)=Wi-Fi
    * Network Authentication=Open
    * Data Encryption=Disabled
  10. Select the option for “This is a computer-to-computer (ad hoc) network, wireless access points are not used”.
  11. You can connect to the network automatically by going to Connection tab and selecting the option for ‘Connect automatically when in range’.
  12. For configuring TCP/IP connection settings, go to General> Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)> properties. Enter below values and click OK:
    * IP Address – 192.168.0.1
    * Subnet Mask – 255.255.255.0
    * Default Gateway – 192.168.0.2

Second Computer:

  1. Follow Step 1 as above.
  2. Enter computer name as ‘COMPUTER2’ and workgroup to ‘WG’.
  3. Follow steps 3-11 as above.
  4. For step 11, enter below values and click OK:
    * IP Address – 192.168.0.2
    * Subnet Mask – 255.255.255.0
    * Default Gateway – 192.168.0.1

Finally, go to Wireless network settings>View Available Wireless Networks. Select the network and you will be connected.

Note: The setting will be same for most for the adapters. However, they may vary in some cases.
