How to remove obsolete icons from notification area of Windows 7?

One common issue with Windows 7 is that icons for uninstalled programs still reside in the notification area. Every time you want to customize the icons that you want to appear in the notification area, you see the icons for programs that have been uninstalled. Although it does not hurt anything; but some users want to remove these icons and make the notification area clean. Below steps will help you remove obsolete ions from the notification area of Windows 7 easily:

  1. Run Regedit
  2. Go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\Local Settings\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\TrayNotify
  3. Go to the right pane
  4. Delete the keys for IconStreams and PasteIconsSteam
  5. Close the registry editor.
  6. Open task manager. You can use open it by right-clicking on task bar or using (CTRL+ALT+DEL).
  7. Go to PROCESSES tab.
  8. Kill EXPLORER.EXE process.
  9. Restart your PC.

Note: It is important to kill the process for EXPLORER.EXE and then restart system, otherwise the icons will reappear again.
