In this article we will show you how to uninstall Windows 7 from your computer in four different scenarios.
1. Windows 7 is installed over an earlier version of Windows
- When you install Windows 7 over Window XP/Vista or different version of Windows 7, it creates a copy of Windows.old folder.
- Windows.old folder in located inside Window partition.
- If you want to go back to previous installation, then visit http://support.microsoft.com/kb/971760/
- Make sure to take the backup of your system before reverting back to the previous installation. Follow instructions at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/971759/
2. Windows 7 is installed for the first time
- In this case you can’t go back to the previous installation as there is none.
- Take the backup of your computer by following instructions at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/971759/
- Insert the Window XP/Vista installation CD/DVD.
- Follow the Windows XP/Windows 7 installation procedure at http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/help/install-reinstall-uninstall
- Restore your Windows 7 data, when the installation is completed.
3. Upgrade from Windows Vista to Windows 7
- If you upgraded from Window Vista based Computer System, then there will be no Windows.old folder from which you can go back to previous installation.
- In this scenario, follow the steps provided in Scenario # 2.
4. Windows 7 is installed in multi-boot with another Windows installation
- If you have multiple windows installed and you want to uninstall Windows 7 only then follow instructions at http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/Uninstall-Windows-7-on-a-multiboot-system
