How to use Microsoft Windows 7 SDK for time boot & boot tracing?

In order to start the time boot process in Windows, we need Windows performance tool kit. But, Microsoft does not allow download of this installer. However, using Windows 7 SDK, we can get this installer by following a simple process.

Steps:

Follow below steps to proceed with the installation of Windows Performance Tool Kit.

  • Download Web Installer.
  • Select “Win32 Development Tools” and click install.

  • After installation, navigate to C drive > Program files > Microsoft SDKs > Windows > v7.0 > bin”. Then search for below files:
File Name Operating System
wpt_ia64.msi Itanium Windows
wpt_x64.msi 64-bit Windows Vista, Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 (R2)
wpt_x86.msi 32-bit Windows Vista, Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008
  • Open Command Prompt.
  • Type below commands to explore the information about boot time, Shutdown, hibernate and resume respectively.
    Note:
    Replace C:\TEMP with any temporary directory on your machine.

  • After the reboot of Windows 7, log in to windows and you can view the traced files “C:\TEMP”.

For analysis, you can upload the generate file or files on download share. You can view the information by opening Trace file of Performance Analyzer.
