Whenever you open a mail in outlook, outlook will by default mark it as read regardless of how long or how small fraction of time that mail was kept opened. To solve this problem, outlook offers an option to the users where they can customize the time outlook will take to mark an item as read. To customize the time, follow the given procedure.
For outlook 2010:
- Open Microsoft outlook version 2010. Go to File and click Options.
- Select the mail from the options windows and roll down to Outlook Panes and press the button of Reading Panes.
- Mark the option of “Mark items as read when viewed in the Reading Pane”.
- Enter the number of seconds you want outlook to wait before marking an email as read.
For outlook 2007:
- Go to Tools > Options.
- Under the Other tab, click on Reading Pane and set the Mark as Read settings.
That’s it. Now outlook will always wait for the given number of seconds before marking the mail as read.
