Svchost.Exe: Is It Safe or Not?

Svchost.exe can be seen in the processes in task manager. It is not a virus, but a generic host. Microsoft defines it as name for services running from dynamic library. The dynamic library files consist of a big chunk of code which can be manipulated by developers to make things faster.

It is possible to know about what processes are being hosted by svchost.exe. To check it, follow the given steps:

  • Go to Start menu and open Command Prompt.
  • Type tasklist /SVC in the Command Prompt Window and hit the Enter key.
  • It will display all the dynamic libraries hosted by svchost.exe.

The above information can also be accessed by ussing a free program named as process explorer. It can be donloaded form http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896653.aspx. This is a standalone application and do not require installation.

  • Extract the zipped file and click to launch it. It will show you the list of all the dynamic libraries running by svchost.exe.
  • To have more details about svchost.exe, right-click the svchost.exe and go to Properties > Services
