Default folder icons are changeable in Windows 7

In windows 7, you can change yellow folder icons to any other view you want instead. For changing the icons view, you should turn off thumbnails; otherwise only empty folders will display new icons, when folder view is set as small icons, list or details, it will display the icons of your own choice, which you have set. These are the steps to change display for folder icons.

  • Open start menu, and type regedit.exe, and then press enter. Click on yes if it is prompted by UAC.
  • ‘HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer’ is the location to go, in left pane, you will right click on explorer, click on new and then on key. You will see shell pane, at right side, click on empty space, click on new and string value, type 3 there and press enter, right click on folder number and select modify.
  • When you want to use own custom icon, give proper path and click on ok. While using another icons, install iconviewer program, it will give you access to imageres.dll, right click on it and go to properties for icons tab. Select any one and type path in edit string.
  • Now log off or restart the computer, you will see folder icons are changed to new display.
