Just like Windows Vista, latest operating system Windows 7 also uses “folder” templating mechanism to display different column fields in parts. It also remembers your preference for column fields located inside folder but Windows Vista does not allow this. If you don’t know how to add or remove columns in Windows Explorer then this tutorial will help you out to do so.

How to hide or remove column fields in explorer window

To hide from “Sort by” menu, make a right click on header of sort column.

Uncheck field name from popup context menu that opens.

To remove it from details view, click on “More” located inside Sort by submenu.

Dialog box will display with column header that are available. Uncheck the column that you want to hide and then click on “OK” button to get new changes.

How to Show columns in Windows explorer

Make a right click on any column header that is available currently in details view and then click on “More” from opened context menu.

Here you will see all column fields that are available currently. Uncheck means the field is not visible in file details view. To show it, simply check the box and click “OK”. All done!

To access any folder quickly what procedure you apply? There are few programs and folders that you open regularly so you want to place these folders to specific location from where you can fetch them quickly. Windows 7 allows you either to create a shortcut of that specific folder on desktop or add its link in Favorites. Today you will see how to get any frequent used folder with single mouse click. Have a look!

Explore Windows Explorer and navigate to path containing desired folder that you want to access quickly.

Once you find it, right click on that folder and select “Create shortcut” from popup context menu. Here one of two actions will occur as given below:

Windows 7 will create shortcut of folder inside the folder that you opened (folder that contains your specific folder). Right click on shortcut that you created recently and select “Cut” from context menu. Now paste it on your desktop.

If the specific folder is located inside protected or special operating system folder such as “Program files” then Windows 7 will open a dialog box with confirmation message: “Windows can’t create a shortcut here. Do you want the shortcut to be placed on the desktop instead?”. If you click “No” button, nothing will happen. Click on “Yes” button and it will create shortcut directly on your Windows 7 desktop.

Now you can open folder directly from desktop without accessing it from location inside Windows Explorer.

Exploring the content of your start menu is quite easy to achieve and can be done if the user knows how to locate the All Users start menu folder. This folder contains shortcuts and such that are visible on your profile. The other is the standard start menu folder. To access the content in the start menu folder is pretty simple once people get to know how to access the folders. The steps below explain the procedure necessary to get familiar with in order to gain access.

Accessing Windows Start Menu Folder:

Go over to your start menu and click on it.

Go over to the built in search feature on the start menu display tray and enter the line “
%APPDATA%\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu”.

Easier way to do that would be to copy the given line and paste in the search field to prevent the trouble of typing it done. Once it is pasted, press enter.

Windows would bring you to windows explorer screen with the folder searched for, open in front of you. Double click on the Programs folder and look around on the content that is present there.

If you wish to know the location of this folder, just click on the link given in the address bar. Click on it and it should become highlighted; now you can cut, copy and modify it as you wish.

Mostly when we want to run a certain program, we get prompted by a warning that prevents us from running the program unless we have administrator privileges. Running a program as an administrator is different from a normal user. Running a program as an administrator can be done in two ways; either we can do this by using the start menu feature or from any folder on the hard drive.

Running Applications As An Administrator:

There are two ways to access the programs as discussed earlier. One of the first ways could be to access them from the Start Menu.

Accessing Programs From Start Menu:

Go to Start Menu and then into the Programs menu.

Locate the program that you wish to initialize.

Upon the program of your choice, press Shift and then Right click on it.

Choose the option Run As Administrator from the drop down menu that pops up.

If you’re the administrator, then you would only have to press Yes on the UAC that pops up, otherwise if you know the Administrator password, enter it in the dialog box that shows up.

Accessing Programs From Any Folder:

The procedure is mostly similar, except this time you would have to locate the executable from your hard drive and would have to press Shift and repeat the process explained for accessing them through your start menu.

Download the custom fonts from the internet. There are many websites that offer custom fonts free for download.

Make sure to download it in Windows format and file should have .ttf extension. Sometimes the file is in zip form and you cannot assess if it has .ttf extension or not, so go ahead and download it.

It will open the font previewer.

Click the install button.

You can also directly install the font and skip the previewer window. For this, simply right-click the font and click install. It will directly install the font without showing preview.
